QUESTION POSED ON: 02 October 2006
I keep hearing tape is dead, should I start moving my clients away from tape?

EXPERT RESPONSE
Before discarding tape, take a look at how tape is being used and how it can be used more effectively along with what if any issues you may be currently having with tape. Tape can be a good complimentary technology to disk to disk data protection (3DP). For example daily backups and snapshots would be performed to disk to enable rapid and easy file restoration as needed while tape is used for longer term data storage and archiving transport to off-site storage facilities. Tape is not yet dead and remains viable for many environments and applications, however 3DP including disk based backup is gaining popularity along with electronic off-site backups.
