Database catalogs and meta data are the files and information that describe how and where your client's data is stored. If the catalogs are incomplete, not backed up or inconsistent, the rest of your customer's data may be useless.
You should also make a habit to testing your backups to ensure they are working properly. This can easily be done by copying the stored data to an empty disk and validating that all files and information is in the correct state.
