IBM adds Storwize V7000 Unified array for multiprotocol storage
IBM yesterday launched the Storwize V7000 Unified storage array, its first internally developed multiprotocol storage system for block and file access.
The unified system launch was part of a rollout of IBM storage products that includes automated tiering software for arrays and the cloud. IBM Active Cloud Engine is a new application, and IBM enhanced its Easy Tier software for moving data across tiers on arrays with solid-state drives (SSDs).

“We were able to do an on-site demo of the StorSimple appliance, which really gave us a chance to try it out and really talk about it,” Magee explained. The new appliance is managing the college’s entire VMware environment for primary, archive, backup and offsite disaster recovery (DR) for both of its campuses. SMC educates 3,000 students at two campuses in Dowagiac and Niles.

FlashSoft makes quick upgrade to SSD-caching software
Startup FlashSoft, which was first out with flash caching software, is looking to stay ahead of impending competition with a major upgrade to its FlashSoft SE barely four months after making the software generally available.
FlashSoft last week said FlashSoft SE 2 is in beta, with support for Linux, larger solid-state drives (SSDs) and read-only cache. FlashSoft SE improves application performance with solid-state storage by turning SSD and PCI Express (PCIe) server flash into a cache for the most frequently accessed data.

IBM Global Services picks Nirvanix for cloud storage
IBM Global Services unveiled a cloud storage service for archived and infrequently accessed data today, based on technology from Nirvanix.
The OEM deal with Nirvanix provides IBM with the storage protion of its IBM SmartCloud Enterprise services. IBM bills the SmartCloud storage service as best suited for unstructured data for companies in media and entertainment, healthcare and financial services. Nirvanix’s object storage is designed for content shared across geographical locations and for data that must be retained for long periods. IBM pitches SmartCloud storage as an alternative to tape for backups and archiving.

OS33 unveils cloud drive for MSPs
OS33, an IT as a Service delivery platform for MSPs, rolled out its OS33 Cloud Drive, which allows MSPs to enable a unified file system. OS33’s Webtop with Cloud Drive technology lets end users access their files from any device across cloud-based and local applications. OS33 Cloud unifies the storage capabilities of Amazon Simple Storage, SharePoint 2010 Doclibs for ECM and Microsoft Windows on NTFS and DFS.
