Trying to build up channel sales for SMBs, EMC Corp. today launched a Data Domain DD160 backup deduplication appliance exclusively through its channel and upgraded its channel-only VNXe unified storage system.
The DD160 is the smallest of the Data Domain backup deduplication appliances and the first to be sold exclusively through the channel. The 2U box holds either 1.6 TB or 4 TB of capacity, and EMC claims its deduplication software reduces the data footprint by an average of 10 times to 30 times. The DD160 has a maximum throughput of 1.1 TB per hour with EMC’s DD Boost software and 667 gigabytes per second (GBps) when connected to a backup server through a NAS interface.
Pricing for the DD160 backup deduplication starts at $10,000. It will compete with Quantum Corp.’s DXi4601 system launched last week, deduplication targets from ExaGrid and backup appliances with dedupe from Symantec Corp.

EMC also added support for flash drives and increased memory and capacity for the VNXe SMB system that rolled out in January as part of the new VNX unified storage platform. The dual-controller VNXe3300 supports 100 GB flash drives, and the VNXe3100 has 8 GB of system memory per controller (it is available with one or two controllers). The VNXe3100 previously supported 4 GB of memory per controller.
EMC also added sales and incentive programs for the VNXe for its Velocity partners, which include Arrow Electronics Inc., Avnet Inc., Ingram Micro Inc. and Tech Data Corp. Partners can offer VNXe systems to customers for a 45-day trial. EMC added a “quick ship” program that lets it deliver six preconfigured models within two days.
