Thailand floods have NetApp treading water
NetApp executives admit they are concerned about how the hard drive shortage caused by floods in Thailand will affect their sales over the next few months. Those concerns prompted the vendor to lower its forecast for next quarter and brought negative reactions on Wall Street.
Of course, NetApp isn’t the only company that will feel the sting of a hard drive shortage. All storage companies will suffer from a shortage of drives, and customers will suffer too as prices go up. But NetApp also has other issues. Its revenue from last quarter was slightly below expectations, and NetApp is facing increased competition from rival EMC in clustered NAS and unified storage. There is also a potentially sticky matter concerning sales of NetApp storage into Syria for use of an Internet-surveillance system -- a situation that NetApp claims it had nothing to do with.

Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) switches they rolled out earlier this year have
been an immediate hit in the market, with customers upgrading at a faster pace than they did with 8
Gbps and 4 Gbps switches.
During the vendor’s earnings results call last week, Brocade reported nearly $40 million in revenue from 16 Gbps directors and switches in the first full quarter of availability. Brocade’s total FC revenue was approximately $303 million last quarter. The total FC revenue grew about 10% from the previous quarter, although it was down about 4% from last year. Brocade execs pointed out that all of the major storage vendors have qualified their 16 Gbps FC gear while rival Cisco has yet to support 16 Gbps FC.

EMC upgrades Atmos Cloud Delivery Platform to a vApp
Last week, EMC Corp. upgraded its Atmos Cloud Delivery Platform (CDP), making it a VMware vApp while adding more granular metering services, reporting and visibility tools for cloud storage providers.
The Atmos CDP 1.1 is an option to EMC’s Atmos object storage platform, used by service providers to deliver storage as a service (SaaS). That option is now packaged as a VMware vApp, so that individual virtual machines (VMs) can function as a unit for multitiered applications.

Nevex Virtual Technologies launches channel partnership program
Nevex Virtual Technologies, a Toronto-based software developer of Nevex CacheWorks, announced the launch of its channel partnership program, which will offer channel membership to VARs that specialize in database optimization, virtualization, enterprise applications, storage or server infrastructure. It offers customized collateral and an “early adopter” program for Nevex VARs.
IT Hall of Fame opens nominations for next class
Trade association CompTIA announced last week that the IT Hall of Fame, which recognizes the iconic figures who have built and shaped the global IT industry, is now accepting nominations for its next group of inductees. The IT Hall of Fame consists of two “wings.” The IT Channel Wing recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions or provided outstanding service to the IT channel. The IT Innovators Wing honors individuals responsible for outstanding technology innovations.
Nominations for the IT Hall of Fame may be submitted online or by downloading the nomination form and submitting via mail or fax. The deadline for nominations is January 17, 2012.
Storage Guardian integrates with ConnectWise PSA software
Storage Guardian, an online and cloud backup solutions provider for small and medium-sized businesses, has announced the integration of its online backup software with the ConnectWise Professional Services Automation (PSA) software. Storage Guardian now offers backup session reporting that allows MSPs to manage clients’ backup activities via a standard ConnectWise PSA service board.
