Microsoft Corp. is expanding further beyond file protection with a new version of the backup tool it designed for data centers.

Version 2 of System Center Data Protection Manager 2006, a beta of which was released this week, can support a range of server-based Microsoft applications, including Exchange 2000 Server, Exchange Server 2004, SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005.

Another beta version due in the spring will include continuous data protection for the system state of a running server, as well as for SharePoint Portal Server.

Previous versions lacked broad server support and were more generally geared toward recovering individual files rather than whole databases, analysts said. The product will be released to manufacturing next summer, for about $500 per server and $180 per software agent.
