After EMC Corp. bought deduper Avamar Technologies, and Hitachi Data Systems Inc. execs said the company will continue to rebrand and resell deduping software from Diligent Technology Corp.

The big difference is that Avamar uses agent software on each server that dedupe data before it's sent to central storage. Diligent dedupes in a central repository. Avamar says that's an inefficient use of bandwidth; HDS likes the ability to keep an index of all the data in central memory for quicker response during backup and recovery.

Analysts said the products are apples and oranges, but that EMC's acquisition might set other vendors off to buy dedupers of their own.

Other buzz:

  • Microsoft also hinted last week that it might rebrand its Windows Storage Server 2003 soon.

  • Meanwhile IBM released a new version of its iSCSI target software with automated provisioning and Volume Shadow Copy snapshots. It should compete with Hewlett-Packard Co.'s All-in-One box.

  • The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) hasn't finished crunching the numbers, but preliminary results from a survey of its members show that interoperability of multivendor storage products is a growing frustration -- one vendors are going to have to address sooner rather than later.
