Database administrators (DBAs) expect to need more storage space for databases in 2007, and they will be increasingly responsible for maintaining it, according to a survey by the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG).
More than 90% of DBAs who responded to the survey said their storage needs will grow, and 43% have said storage issues have held back new applications in the last two years. Delays were less frequent in companies in which DBAs also managed day-to-day storage issues.
To help back up and retrieve this increasing body of information, companies are looking past traditional tape backups and maintaining searchable archives on disk. About a third of all companies have some archiving system in place, according to a report published January 2006 by the Enterprise Strategy Group, and this number grows to more than half among companies with 20,000 or more employees.
